How do we truly capture a moment?

Have you  ever had one of those moments where you smile, breathe in deeply and sigh…thinking, this is just perfect, I am so happy to be here right now and I wouldn’t change this moment for anything?? How do we truly capture these moments? If not by camera, video, diary entry…then how? Will my memory of this time be enough? Will the way this moment makes me feel change something deep inside me that will allow me to be thankful, to live in moment more often and to know that there is always beauty all around us?

We both had our own version of this moment a week or so ago, free camping at Avoca Beach. With dinner done, we were settling in for the night, side door open, lounging around enjoying the ocean breeze, chit chatting about not very much. No music tonight, no devices, just the sound of the ocean.

As time passes and the night sky grows darker, I see the moon start to rise over the water, popping in and out of passing clouds. Huge and full of light, magical almost as the light shines on the waves in a way that looks like a stairway up to the moon. Eyes bright, full of life, I stand up on the couch and lean all the way up and out of the van (feeling kind of like Rose in Titanic!!) so I can take in all of this view and really feel it. A sense of freedom and contentment washes over me as I marvel at Mother Nature’s beauty.

I coax Frank from his comfy relaxed state “you have to come see this!!” His response is the same – WOW!!!

There have been so many moments like this on our journey thus far. Getting up close with the stingray in Merimbula, seeing huge black butterflies dance in the sunlight through the forests in Currarong, watching an enormous goanna casually stroll by the van in Hawks Nest, foraging for seashells on the shoreline, washing them and comparing our prizes, throwing back the ones that still have a little creature living in them. And the sunrises…getting up early to make it to the beach before first light. Being the only ones around. Still sleepy eyed as we patiently await the pastel hues which change in moments.

How do we truly capture these moments…with a grateful heart.

We so agree with your comments….and the moments you describe are worth waiting for regardless of rain/weather, etc….even those annoying moments make it all the more special.
