Eden…a town of many…many signs!

Yesterday we arrived in Eden…with all of it’s signage! Where to go, what to see, what to do, how to do it and of course what not to do!

We proceed to the local Information Centre in hope to find a free camp, as the weather was good, plenty of sunshine for solar charge and we had loads of water on board. We are greeted by a less than friendly elderly woman as I ask her the question very politely “we have a fully self sufficient campervan and wondered if there were any places we can free camp in Eden”. No verbal response, but she grabs her map and points us 25km out of town in 2 directions. “The only place you can camp for free is in the middle of the bush.” Ok….how about a low cost campground in town?? She passes us a business card for another location 25km North. Yeh…thanks but no thanks.

We take a drive around, find a van park for $37 per night for a powered site. That’s pretty low cost lady!! After some exploring of the town (10km of walking in fact!) we find plenty of places we could camp. A large space at the wharf where other campervans were, which had showers and toilets! A rest stop just around the corner with bbq facilities and another with toilet facilities tucked away 5 minutes from the beach! So, lesson learnt. Ask at the information centres, however, if they are less than helpful, take a good drive or walk around town and check out what it offers. Each town is sure to have somewhere we can stay for a night without wasting money on vanparks.

Which gets me to my next topic – the signage!! Never have we seen sooo much signage in one vanpark….literally 4 separate signs at the basketball court, signs on every lamp post, on the fences…even the trees!! And a big notice about litigation?! Are you serious….is this place really that dangerous or do you just have a certain type of clientele?!

Off to a café this morning for a 10 minute wait at the counter to order and an even longer wait for the first coffee, then a wait so long for the 2nd coffee that we drank them separately! The 7cm froth on my latte resembled washed up beach foam, was so hot I burnt my tongue and tasted so bad we literally got up and left after one mouth full. Not worth the wait and how this café was awarded anything on TripAdvisor is beyond me!!

All of this aside, what a lovely town with some great old properties, amazing seafood and views over the Sapphire Coast to die for. Well, not quite, I stayed far enough back from the edge of the cliff 😉

Today also marks 5 weeks that we have been living in Lucy full time! We have settled in so well, have everything we need and more. Most of all, we have the ability to pick up and find our next place to wander by turning a key.

Off to Pambula and Merrimbula tomorrow to check out my childhood camping spots.
