Couch / spare bed / doggy den
After finishing our bed frame on a high…we came crashing down trying to figure out and build the framework to our couch, which will also double as a spare bed for guests and a doggy den for our two – Wolly, my 13 year old Black Barb Kelpie and Frank’s 7 year old English Bulldog, Arnie.
Trying to get all the measurements correct, so that the dogs each have enough space to stand up, sit and lie comfortably, whilst having their own access and ventilation and still having the couch as a comfortable space for us to relax proved to be a whole lot more difficult than we imagined!! We thought that surely it would only take one day …. oooo how we were wrong!!
After calling it quits for the day, we sheepishly came back to couch frame the following day and thankfully, she came together nicely and we are super pleased with the finished product!
We used structural pine for the body, fence palings for the sides which we’ll varnish and a lightweight top which will also be sealed and varnished before we custom make the cushioning.
I think our greatest challenge really is worrying that we aren’t making it strong enough at the start, but as we keep going, it all comes together and the strength is more than enough!! Also, Franky is a perfectionist and “good enough” just is not good enough for him…meaning that on day one of the couch, he ended up filing and sanding to the millimetre, into night! See our gallery for all the pics.
