Kitchen framing!!
Framing framing framing!! Seems to be the flavour of the week!
Kitchen frame work is now complete, after 2 days. Again, the first day was the most difficult. We drew out a plan, but, with the van having different angles, edges and rounded contours, our square plan didn’t seem to be so much of plan any more, and become somewhat of a guide!! Again, adapt adapt adapt! Our chameleon side comes out!
We start the frame work against the back of the driver and passenger seats which will form a wall behind our kitchen, to be used as a splashback, for cupboards and a barrier to the front cabin. First hurdle – the passenger seat does not move forwards and it actually comes out into the back of the van, meaning the wall cannot be square…..urghhhh….ok, only a half wall on this side then! First modification. Then, the timber we are using isn’t perfectly straight and we can’t have a wonky frame, because then we’ll have wonky cupboards…and that’s just not ok! So, off to Bunnings for some timber that is actually straight!! We’ve been using as much recycled and reclaimed timber as we can, but for some elements, we really need good quality straight timber, so have chosen Australian, responsibly sourced timber.
Day 2 is again a lot easier. We measure out the fridge space, toilet space and have a good height for our counter tops. We’re both quite tall, so didn’t want to hunching over.
We also have my favourite feature – the “anti-bandit” escape route!! (my friend Luke just thinks this is hilarious!) I wanted to feel safe that if we were sleeping and someone tried to break it, that rather than having to physically get out of the van and run around to the driver doors, that we can instead jump through from back to front and drive away! Bye bye bandits!! So, we’re leaving a gap in between the driver and passenger seats. This will also be nice to see what is going on the back (ie: doggies) while we are driving – no hooligan behaviour kids!!

Over and out!
